Advanced Learner Loans expansion

Advanced Learner Loans expansion

03 December 2015

From academic year 2016/17, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills are expanding Advanced Learner Loans to include those aged 19 - 23 years old and those studying at level 5 and level 6.

Below is the paragraph from the Spending Review Autumn Statement covering the announcement:

“The government will expand loans to 19 to 23 year olds at levels 3 and 4, and 19+ year olds at levels 5 and 6 to provide a clear route for learners to develop high-level technical and professional skills. This will benefit an estimated 40,000 students a year. The government will also consult on introducing maintenance loans for people who attend specialist, higher-level providers, including National Colleges.”

The full statement can be accessed here (see section 7.3)

The expanded policy will be implemented from the beginning of the 2016/17 academic year.  Learners will be able to apply for a loan for courses starting on or after the 1st August 2016, from May 2016.  More details will be provided by the Skills Funding Agency in the Funding Rules.  SLC are working with the Skills Funding Agency and BIS to update resources for providers on the Student Finance England Practitioners website.
