Statistics on student loans debt and repayment

Statistics are presented according to financial years, where the financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March.

The amount of student loans paid out has increased every year since they were introduced in 1990. We provide here some charts that give a comparison of key statistics across the four different government administrations within the UK;

Student Loans Balance by Government Administration within the UK

Average debt on entry into repayment by Government Administration within the UK

Average repayment via HMRC per year by Government Administration within the UK

Series of publications

We publish two series for student loans debt and repayment. From June 2014 onwards we will publish a single series for each government administration, which will combine the statistics previously published separately.

  • Student loans debt and repayment - this series covers all debt at all stages (before liability to repay as well as after it) with some high level statistics on repayments.
  • Income Contingent Repayments by cohort - this series deals with Income Contingent Repayment (ICR) loans that have become liable for repayment - and analyses repayment status and amounts in some detail.

The latest publications are for financial year 2017-18 and tax year 2016-17. The 'Income Contingent Repayments by cohort' series is one year behind because it uses repayment information that is supplied to us only after the tax year has ended.
