Student loans will be cancelled if a customer:

Cancellation due to a disability

If you can prove that you’re permanently unfit for work due to a disability, your student loan can be cancelled. You’ll need to send copies of the two following items as evidence:

  1. A letter from a Doctor or Consultant stating that you’re 'Permanently unfit for work' dated within the last 6 months; and
  2. A letter from the benefits agency which shows you are in receipt of a disability related benefit. This must be the latest letter of assessment and you must send all pages.

The following benefits mean you may be eligible for student loan cancellation:

  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payments
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • An Additional Universal Credit Award Relating to Disability
  • Industrial Injuries Benefit
  • Severe Disablement Allowance

Evidence, along with your Customer Reference Number should be sent to:

Cancellation due to a death

If a customer has died before the loan debit is repaid, we’ll need one of the following as evidence:

  • Original death certificate.
  • Original coroner’s interim certificate.
  • Copy of coroner’s certificate stamped by the coroner.
  • Copy of a foreign death certificate.

The cancellation request, along with the Customer Reference Number should be sent to:

Depending on where and when you took out your student loan(s), these may be cancelled after a period of time.
